Will Google Caffeine Boost Your Search Engine Results

by Josh Howard on August 17, 2009

Google recently announced plans for a new Google web search engine.  At first glance you won’t recognize anything different, but Google is in the phase of boosting their algorithms. They code named it ‘Caffeine’ for those of us that have suggestions or feedback. You will see a link at the bottom of the results for the BETA version.  Click the link that says dissatisfied, and add your feedback or suggestions to help improve it more! Here is a quick snippet of what Google had to say about the changes they are going to be implementing.

To build a great web search engine, you need to:

  1. Crawl a large chunk of the web.
  2. Index the resulting pages and compute how reputable those pages are.
  3. Rank and return the most relevant pages for users’ queries as quickly as possible.

For the last several months, a large team of Googlers has been working on a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google’s web search. It’s the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions. The new infrastructure sits “under the hood” of Google’s search engine, which means that most users won’t notice a difference in search results. But web developers and power searchers might notice a few differences, so we’re opening up a web developer preview to collect feedback.

How Does This Effect Your Online Business

I want you to pay close attention to when Google says that it will push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness, and other dimensions.  When Google tells you they are changing something, I strongly recommend you listen to what they have to say.

Google has given us a heads up on some of the things they are going to be looking for when organizing the search engine results.  You need to start implementing those things now, so you will be one step ahead of your competition.  Let’s face it; every online business depends on SEO for part of their daily traffic.  Google is helping us out by giving us a few things to start working on now!

I want to mention each one quickly and how it is relevant to your internet business.

  1. Comprehensiveness:  This is telling you that Google will continue to favor the older websites that provide a huge amount of content for their selected niche.  You can’t really compete with the authority sites if you are a newbie.  This best advice I can give you is to add continued content that is relevant to your niche regularly.  This will gain you favor in the eyes of Google search engine results and help in being competitive.
  2. Accuracy:  This could be considered part of Comprehensiveness:  The best way to gain favor with Google is through this 2nd step.  You need to be providing the right type of information for the keywords that you are targeting.  This also includes how your visitors are behaving when they come to your site.  This step alone can take several hours to days for you to get right.  Start watching how your visitors are behaving or reacting to your pages.  Change those things that your visitors don’t like.  Doing this now will help you with your search engine results.
  3. Size and Indexing Speed:  This is a rather obvious one, but one that is completely out of your control.  This will help to get your content out to the online market faster.  I don’t seem to have a problem getting my pages indexed rather quickly.  Google is helping you to get your content out as fast as they can.  I really like that they are taking this step!  I would find the task rather daunting if I had to do it myself.  I can see why Google is taking on such a huge task.  New content is being added daily that needs to be indexed and shown to those who are looking for it.  Google is trying to provide better search results for their customers.

Google has given the sandbox URL for us to test out.  Take some time to look it over.  Once the new Google web search is out of BETA you will already be ahead of your competition.

When it comes to SEO I hate change! We work really hard to get good SE traffic and once things start working out Google wants to change. I guess the point to be taken here is it will eventually be easier to rank for targeted keywords.

But the same thing can be said for our competition so in the end how much better is it really for us?

I tried that link you gave to the Google Sandbox and I’m ranking the same right now but as you suggested I will keep checking over the next few weeks to see about any changes.

Brian is right. Change in SEO is a nightmare especially for those who already spent ages to study and perfected SEO.

what googlebot sees in your website?hmm…well they can only “see” is ‘text’ for them to categorize and indexed your website…they dont really care how good your design is…and of course the ‘relevancy’ of the content. Therefore, put great information in your content for them to hunt you down

Well put! Search engines are going to find you by your relevant content. Then you can start focusing on the design and other cool flashy “stuff” :-)

I think this whole process will be a lot easier for those that are already doing the right things, such as targeting those relevant keywords. I feel the pain you mentioned. I hate the fact that SEO is always changing. I guess you just learn to go with the flow!

Its nice that Goggle is there to help out blogspot and wordpress blogs. But why does Bing neglect bloggers? Will this new search engine competition help the blogger community? Or will it be just another costky jucky project ?
