I know choosing a domain for your home business isn’t rocket science, but it can play an important role on the type and quantity of visitors you receive.
Let me; first of all, ask you some simple questions that you should ask yourself. What do you take into consideration with your domain name? Are you thinking of your domain name as online real-estate? Are you picking a good location for branding, marketing, traffic, etc? Did you consider a name that is easy to remember? How much natural branding do you want to receive? If you have already asked yourself similar questions that I have presented, then you are already on the right track!
Choose A Domain For Your Niche
You need to think of your domain as online real-estate. This is the first step in branding and optimizing your home business for internet marketing. When you look at your domain name, what is it telling your visitors they are going to find on the other side? When choosing your domain, you need it to relate to the niche you have chosen. This will give your niche instant natural branding and SEO perks!
Your Domain Says What?
You want to make sure that the domain you have chosen will not be confused with other domains. An example would be Igotyou.com and your domain is Igotsyou.com. This isn’t a marketable domain. You will be confused with Igotyou.com, and will be sending people to their domain.
Don’t Abbreviate Your Domain
You want the domain to be connected with something from your website. It will be easier to remember a domain that has pictures of sunglasses and is called BuySunGlasses.com vs. BSG.com.
Why Doesn’t My Domain Rank Well?
There is a double benefit to adding targeted keywords to your domain name. The rather obvious one, that I have mentioned, is for marketing your business to people. The second reason is to let the search engines know where to target your domain. A domain name, with the keyword baseball cards, will have a better chance of being indexed under that targeted keyword. In today’s market that is easier said than done!
Placing Keywords In Your Domain
It is very hard to find a domain that isn’t long, but still has the keywords that you want to target. It is now becoming common practice to include dashes in your domain name. There is nothing wrong with doing this as an option. It actually makes it easier for the search engines to recognize the keywords! I would try and limit the domain to no more than three words.
A method that I have used to help me in finding good domain names is by using the synonyms of keywords. I will share an example with you. You want to target anti-virus as your keyword. Your site is a guide to help people choose the right anti-virus. You decide to make your domain name antivirusguide.com. When you go to make your domain purchase, it isn’t available. Anyone that has done this before can tell you how frustrating this can become.
I have had pretty good success by using synonyms of certain words. It is important that you keep anti-virus as you keyword, because that is where the most traffic comes from. You can, however, change the word guide to guidebook, handbook, or manual to name a few.
Choosing the right domain isn’t rocket science, but you don’t just want to name it whatever comes to mind. Using these tips will supercharge your domain to dominate over the competition.
