I often times relate to tactical strategies the military uses, such as booby traps, for inspiration on building relationships with visitors. I will elaborate a bit on this in just a moment, but I wanted to ask you a quick question. What tactics are you using to build relationships with your visitors? I want you to think of some ideas you would use to build relationships with our own visitors. Do you have some written down? Ok, I will share some that I have chosen, and you can add any that you didn’t think of to your list.
Adding Video
Simply posting video with you in them can allow people to get a sense of who you are. It is almost allowing them to be there and experience it in person. Video has always seemed to capture the attention of just about anybody. It also gives people a break from always having to read something. You can use video in a variety of ways. Maybe there is something that you can show your visitors how to do. I am a visual person and love to see how to do something versus reading it. You can add video with you talking about an upcoming event, or you recorded an interview with someone who is well known. The sky is the limit when it comes to adding video to your home business. Doing this gives people a chance to see you in action that they just can’t get from reading your words.
Creating Podcasts
I think this is a good one to use often. The world has become a place of constant motion. Everyone has things to do, and places to go. They want their things now! I know many people that download podcasts on a regular basis. They don’t have time to read an article, but they will download it and take it with them to listen to or watch. You are once again allowing that person the ability to still receive your content in a way that is convenient for them.
Doing this will open the doors to more people that might be too busy to come to your website, and read or watch what you have for them. They will get to know your voice and personality. Remember that you are trying to build relationships with your visitors. This becomes so much easier when you are able to let them hear and see a real person. You will be branding yourself into their minds.
I like to think of it as a form of hypnotic marketing. You may laugh at me or think that it is ridiculous, but I want you to try it and see how many people return to see what else you have to offer them.
Using Your About Page
I have to admit that I didn’t always follow what I am about to share with you. It took me four years to figure this one out on my own. Hopefully it doesn’t take you long to use on your own about page. I would always give information about the business. What the business was about, how long the business had been around, what you could expect from the business, etc. I never once talked about me. I never personalized the about me page. If you are the only one running the business, it gives you the ability to share about your experience and life history. People love to find out who you are. This is a great place to talk about you. Think of it as a personal introduction and welcome to your visitors.
I would recommend that you don’t make it a page that is overbearing about all the accomplishments you have done. In short, write your about page in a way that is personable and lets them know your expertise. You will gain a higher trust and relationship from those that decide to read it.
Bring Yourself Into Your Articles
This one can be a hard one to do. I will just say that it comes with practice and being comfortable with writing. Adding jokes, opinions, and personality into your articles turns your website into something that has some spunk. You don’t want your readers to feel that they are listening to a professor lecture, or to someone giving a report. This will give your readers a way to interact with your site. Remember that you are trying to build relationships with your visitors. They can’t talk to you directly, so you need to bring that into your content to keep them an active reader.
Participate/Answer Questions
When I have a question, I am expecting to get an answer. Don’t leave your visitors hanging in the dust. Reply back to comments from visitors. Give them a place to get a hold of you directly. Don’t forget to follow up after you have sent them an answer to see if they still need your help.
By trapping your visitors with the following tips, you are allowing them to fall to your business strategy of building relationships. Your end goal was met and, like those booby traps the military uses, you have directed them in a path that will be too late to return from.

Hi Josh,
Came across you through Keller’s great WordPress contest idea. Your site – like mine – is a newbie – and the contest is not only a brilliant motivator for us to improve – but we also get to form some sort of mini-community where we share ideas, learn from each other, help each other etc etc. For example, I’ve already learned three very useful things from your site
1. ODIOGO- I might well integrate this “listen now” feature into my own site. It’s a cool tool – and the sound quality is much better than I expected – technology is amazing isn’t it?
2. WISHLIST – looks very interesting & if I order it will be through you (if I buy)
3. XML site maps – I need this ( and lots more!! SEO info / help)
Ok, all for now except to say I know your site is going to be great
Cheers
Will
P.S. Now following you on twitter & will also join your Mybloglog community …
Thanks Will. I am glad to see you enjoying the posts! I will consider writting some more on seo. May I suggest that you place any ideas in the feedback forum on what you are looking for. I am also very excited about the contest. It has been a great way to meet people.
Thanks Josh, will do (now!)
Good post. Thanks!
